Sun protection is important year-round, and is especially key during the summer, with everyone having more fun outside. Large-brimmed hats, rashguards while at the pool, sunglasses, and sunblock are all important to keep your skin protected from damaging UV rays, which cause both wrinkles and discoloration with the skin. Alla’s favorite sunblocks have physical blockers, such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide, are easy to use. “Non-greasy, easy-to-use sun protection products are a must!,” says Alla. Her favorite sunscreens come from Colorescience®, and she strongly recommends the Colorescience® Sunforgettable Brush-on Shield, a powder sunblock that comes in SPF 30 and SPF 50.
“It’s very important to hydrate and nourish the skin in the summer,” says Alla, “as the sun tends to dry our normally protective skin oils.” Besides using a light moisturizer , Alla recommends incorporating a weekly hydrating mask. These cellulose and hyauloric acid-based masks are disposable and easy to find; they are a quick way to boost the moisture content in your skin, especially after swimming in chlorinated pool water or feeling wind-burned after a week at the beach.
Treatments like peels should be postponed to the fall or winter, when there is less sun around; sun-insensitive treatments such as microneedling, dermaplaning, and microneedling with radiofrequency may be performed year-round however.
Allow the skin to take a breather during the warm summer months, and minimize things like heavy coverage and oil-based products that have a tendency to run in the heat. Oily, heavy makeup rarely looks good, and is especially difficult to maintain in the 100+ degree Atlanta summer heat. Less makeup is key for a relaxed, beautiful look.
Alla says that her favorite summertime treatment is dermaplaning, combined with a cleansing facial. During dermaplaning, Alla uses a scalpel blade to exfoliate dead skin cells and the vellus hair (peach fuzz) on the face, allowing brighter smoother skin to appear; dermaplaning also allows for better penetration of active skin care ingredients and smoother make-up application. This treatment has no downtime, and combined with a facial to cleanse and hydrate the skin, dermaplaning is the perfect recipe for glowy, smooth, and summer-ready skin!
