Here are our her recommendations for both getting ready for and recovery after labiaplasty.<\/p><h2>1. Prepare well<\/h2><p>We recommend patients prepare for their labiaplasty procedure by studying their pre-treatment and post-treatment instructions, and ensuring they have everything they will need after labiaplasty ready at home. Tylenol, antibiotic ointment, your favorite music\u2014it\u2019s a great idea to have everything you will need double-checked and ready for your labiaplasty recovery.\u00a0<\/p><h2>2. Cut down on bruising<\/h2><p>A variety of foods, medications and supplements\u2014including aspirin, Advil, vitamin E, and fish oil\u2014thin the blood, increasing the risk of bleeding during labiaplasty and bruising during recovery. We review your medications and supplements during your consultation, and recommend stopping all elective blood-thinning medications at least 7-10 days prior to labiaplasty surgery.\u00a0 Please tell us about all the vitamins and supplements you take, and review carefully the extensive list of blood-thinning medications to avoid which is a part of the pre-treatment instructions.\u00a0 Likewise, consider taking Arnica and Bromelain supplements, which help decrease inflammation and bruising, before and after labiaplasty; you can find these online or pick them up in our clinic.\u00a0 Alcohol acts as a blood-thinner also; to help decrease bleeding and bruising after labiaplasty, we recommend patients avoid alcohol intake for 2 days before and 2 days after treatment.<\/p><h2>3. Keep cool<\/h2><p>Cool compresses help minimize swelling, bruising, and discomfort.\u00a0 Cool compresses are the most important in the first 3 days after labiaplasty surgery, and should be applied to the treated area every 1-2 hours while awake.\u00a0 Keep the cool compresses coming, but do not apply ice directly to the skin (to avoid frostbite on the numbed tissues), she cautions.<\/p><h2>4. Keep the incisions clean<\/h2><p>It is important to clean fresh labiaplasty incisions frequently in the immediate post-treatment period, to decrease crusting and the risk of infection. We recommend using a peri bottle full of tap water to rinse the incisions after using the restroom and at least twice daily.\u00a0 Do not soak the treated areas for 6 weeks after your labiaplasty.\u00a0 Avoid pool, lake, and ocean water for 3 weeks after treatment.<\/p><h2>5. Focus on healing<\/h2><p>Your body needs extra energy to heal after surgery.\u00a0 Support your body by eating plenty of nutritious and scrumptious food; drinking plentiful water; managing discomfort with a proactive regiment of Tylenol and Motrin; and listening to your favorite music\u2014which studies show to improve healing.\u00a0 Avoid weight loss post-operatively, and keep healthy and nutritious calories coming steadily for at least 2-3 weeks post-procedure.\u00a0<\/p><h2>6. Itching is common and very normal<\/h2><p>Immediately after labiaplasty, the labia may be partially numb; this numbness resolves over a few months after treatment. \u00a0As tissues heal, the sensory or feeling nerves reconnect within them; this healing commonly leads to sensations of itching, electrical \u201czings,\u201d and even crawling on the skin.\u00a0 Numbness, intermittent tenderness, and itching are all normal sensations during labiaplasty recovery; know to expect them, and know that they will resolve.<\/p><h2>7. Keep a positive outlook<\/h2><p>A bit of uncertainty and remorse is not unusual after most elective surgeries.\u00a0 The delicate labial tissues swell a lot after surgery, and look nothing like the labiaplasty before and after photos you carefully reviewed online before surgery; but keep in mind this swelling is temporary!
