Dr. Inessa Fishman recently spoke to Eat This, Not That <\/em><\/a>regarding everyday habits that shorten your life. While vaping has gained popularity with the younger crowd, Dr. Fishman cautions against picking up the dangerous habit. Although many may think it to be harmless, \u201cin reality they are exposing themselves to large doses of nicotine and likely many other harmful chemicals. Big no-no!”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Smoking and the use of nicotine products are very harmful to skin, lungs, wound healing abilities, and all sorts of other important factors,” says Dr. Fishman. She warns patients to avoid vaping and other nicotine products for at least 2 weeks pre and post procedures as they can significantly delay healing and increase the risk of complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicotine restricts blood flow and raises heart rate, both of which can be detrimental to your healing post surgery. Proper blood circulation is key to recovery and preventing infection or blood clots. Having nicotine in your system prior to surgery can also cause anesthesia concerns. It may alter dosage required for proper sedation, particularly when the anesthesiologist is not aware. Further, nicotine usage can lead to stress on your heart and lungs, both of which are already stressed by surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to note that you should always inform your doctor about your nicotine usage. While some may be nervous to tell, hiding this information from them will only lead to further complications down the line!<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
