Fat transfer is a treatment where a person’s own fat is moved from one part of the body to another, mostly to add or restore volume. This treatment is commonly performed to rejuvenate the face and hands, and add volume to buttocks in the form of a Brazilian butt lift. We perform fat transfer to rejuvenate and restore volume to the labia majora, and she recently shared her thoughts about this procedure.
Our ability to form collagen decreases with age, leading to thinning of the skin and tissues throughout the body–and women’s intimate anatomy is no exception. The changes that go along pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause also contribute to the thinning of tissues and loss of fat within the delicate anatomy of the labia majora, or the outer lips of tissue around the vaginal opening.
Autologous (or one’s own) fat transfer is usually a short office-based procedure. During treatment, we numb the area from which we plan to harvest the fat, the most common sites being the lower tummy and inner knees. We then perform a small amount of liposuction to gently extract the fat cells from these spots. The fat cells are concentrated and purified, and then re-injected into the labia majora, which have also been numbed during the procedure. We prefer to do fat transfer while patients are awake and relaxed with laughing gas. This treatment can also be performed in the operating room with the help of twilight or general anesthesia. The recovery is usually fairly minimal, and the treatment results are long-lasting.
Who’s a good candidate for fat transfer to the labia majora?
Most healthy women who want to improve the appearance and add plumpness to the outer lips surrounding the vagina, are not pregnant and are not on strong blood-thinning medications, are good candidates for fat transfer.
Can fat transfer be combined with any other procedures?
Fat transfer to the labia majora is a common addition to labiaplasty, a procedure during which we contour and tighten the labia minora (the lips of tissue closest to the vaginal opening). We also often combine labia majora fat transfer with PRP injections for sexual health, and the Votiva non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment.
Intimate health and rejuvenation of women’s intimate anatomy is a passion of our practice. Fat transfer or fat grafting for adding volume is a great tool in the toolbox for intimate wellness. While the recovery for fat transfer is more involved than that of traditional dermal filler injections, we prefer using the patient’s own fat for labial rejuvenation due to its greater longevity and likely associated benefits of stem cells and growth factors from harvested fat.
