Botox and Dysport

Botox® is an injectable muscle-relaxing medication FDA-approved for the cosmetic treatment of frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, and the smile-associated “crows feet” lines around the eyes. Dr. Fishman uses Botox® Cosmetic for these indications, as well as a variety of other “off-label” uses, including bunny lines or the wrinkles at the bridge of the nose, around the mouth lip lines, overly dimpled chins, dynamic neck bands, and excessive sweating in the scalp, face, underarms, and decolletage.

BENEFITS OF BOTOX® TREATMENT

  • Cosmetic Botox® treatment is a minimally uncomfortable procedure that is a powerful tool to rebalance facial features, smooth lines, decrease excessive sweating, treat bruxism or tooth grinding, and slim the face and jawline
  • Regular use of Botox® may prevent lines and smooth out lines already present on the face
  • Some patients report decreased migraines and tension headaches after cosmetic Botox® treatment

BOTOX®: TREATMENT DETAILS

During Botox® treatment, Dr. Fishman injects the targeted muscles–the frowning muscles between the eyebrows, for example–with a small amount of Botox® delivered via a tiny needle. The Botox® medication does not work right away, and usually requires 2-4 days to start showing its effects of muscle relaxation and subsequent wrinkle softening.

IS BOTOX® SAFE?

Besides its cosmetic indications, Botox® is used for a variety of functional reasons, including migraines, vocal cord and swallowing problems, and bladder and muscle spasms. This medication has been thoroughly tested for a variety of indications over several decades, and has a good safety record. Because Botox® has not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women, Dr. Fishman does not treat these patients.

DOES BOTOX® HURT?

Dr. Fishman uses a tiny needle to inject Botox, resulting in minimal discomfort. Both she and her patients describe Botox treatments as varying from “nothing” to a “tiny bee sting,” and to decrease discomfort further, Dr. Fishman sometimes employs cold compresses, a topical numbing medication, a vibration distraction device, and ProNox (laughing gas) during Botox treatments.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS AND RISKS OF BOTOX®?

The most common side effects of Botox® include temporary redness, swelling, and mild tenderness at the injection sites, though most patients are able to return to their daily routine within 20 minutes of injection without much evidence of treatment. Some patients report a headache the day after treatment. Rare risks include a drooping eyelid or heavy forehead; these are temporary, and usually resolve before the remainder of the Botox® treatment wears off.

DYSPORT®

Dysport® is an injectable muscle-relaxing medication FDA-approved for the cosmetic treatment of frown lines (so-called glabellar lines). Dr. Fishman uses Dysport® Cosmetic for this indication, as well as a variety of other “off-label” uses, including horizontal forehead lines, crows feet lines around the eyes, bunny lines or the wrinkles at the bridge of the nose, around-the-mouth lip lines, overly dimpled chins, dynamic neck bands, and excessive sweating in the scalp, face, underarms, and decolletage.

Dysport® is very similar to Botox®, both in its chemical structure and effect. Dr. Fishman uses and enjoys both of these medications in her practice.
