The body’s ability to heal itself is amazing and has been studied for centuries.  Modern medicine has employed this rejuvenative ability for decades through the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) in the fields of Dentistry and Orthopedics, and PRP treatments have grown in popularity in the Aesthetic Medicine field with such stars a Kim Kardashian popularizing the Vampire facial.  PRP is also an effective, commonly used treatment in the field of Sexual Health, and our Urologist and women’s wellness expert, Dr. Shaya Taghechian, frequently reaches for PRP in our practice.

“PRP is essentially the nutrients and growth factors in our blood, in a super concentrated formulation,” says Dr. Taghechian, “and this treatment essentially harvests the body’s natural ability to repair and regenerate its own tissues.”  Dr. Taghechian says that PRP is one of her favorite treatments to improve sexual function, sensation and stimulation, and vaginal lubrication.  “This treatment helps to improve sexual sensation as well as the intensity of orgasms, and improve sexual drive for both men and women,” she says.  Dr. Taghechian often adds on PRP treatments to Votiva (a non-surgical radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation treatment) and labiaplasty procedures for a comprehensive approach to women’s wellness.

How Does PRP Work?
PRP is a relatively short office-based procedure, which involves a quick blood draw and the subsequent processing of the blood sample in a centrifuge; this step separates the red and white blood cells from the rest of the blood, and concentrates the platelets within the blood sample.  Platelets are tiny cell-like particles within our blood that are important in clotting and the healing of tissue after an injury; platelets contain lots of growth factors and various other signals important in tissue regeneration.  By spinning the blood sample in a centrifuge, platelets are isolated and concentrated within the watery component of blood called plasma, and this concentrate–called PRP–is subsequently injected into the tissues Dr. Taghechian aims to heal and improve.

“A little bit of topical numbing medicine and perhaps a small amount of ProNox (laughing gas) make the PRP injections a pretty comfortable treatment,” says Dr. Taghechian.

What are the Benefits of PRP?
PRP can improve the quality and feel of the labial and vaginal tissues in women, and penile tissues in men.  This treatment helps improve low sexual drive by improving sensation in the tissues of the labia, clitoris, G-spot, and penis.  PRP also helps to improve vaginal lubrication and stimulates collagen formation within the vaginal tissues, helping with vaginal tightening.  PRP injections can help decrease pain during intercourse and some cases of mild urinary stress incontinence from vaginal and labial atrophy.

Who is a Good Candidate for PRP Treatments?
Adult women and men who want to improve their sexual health and function may be good candidates for PRP treatments.  A history of severe allergic responses, disorders of the blood or bone marrow systems, and medications which thin the blood may make individuals not good candidates for PRP treatment.
