Cleansing is an important part of a good skincare routine:  it removes the grime and pollution which we all experience during the day, cleanses away inflammatory bacteria and makeup, and allows other active skincare ingredients to penetrate the skin more effectively.  In addition to washing away impurities, cleansers must also protect the skin—and avoid the overly harsh stripping or cleansing which can dry and irritate skin.

One of our favorite cleansers is the ZO® SkinHealth Hydrating Cleanser, which our medical aesthetician, Alla Fishman, commonly recommends to patients whose skin tends towards dryness.  Patients with normal skin can also use this clean-smelling, gentle and effective cleanser which minimizes dryness and irritation without leaving an unpleasant, greasy residue.

The Hydrating Cleanser’s active ingredients include sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, glycerin, sodium PCA and urea.  Sodium hyaluronate is a humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the environment and draws it to the skin; this is an ingredient that is gentle enough to be used even on sensitive or acne-prone skin, and can be used in concentrations up to 2% twice daily.  Pathenol is a moisturizing agent as well, which has anti-inflammatory properties and is important in the regulation of cells important for wound healing and skin health.
