Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week

Rinoplastia is a transformative procedure that enhances both the appearance and function of the nose. At Aviva Plastic Surgery, we guide you through every step of the process, ensuring a smooth and comfortable recovery under the expert care of Dra. Inessa Fishman. If you’re planning for a nose surgery and wondering about the recovery process—including when you can return to work, social events, or even a wedding—here’s a detailed timeline of what to expect.

The First Week: Rest & Healing

The initial recovery phase is crucial for proper healing. After your rhinoplasty, you’ll have a splint on your nose for protection and to help maintain the new shape. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are expected but improve with time. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Days 1-3: Prioritize rest, keep your head elevated, and use cold compresses to minimize swelling.
  • Day 4-7: You’ll start feeling more comfortable, though swelling will still be noticeable. Most patients take the first full week off from work or school to allow for adequate healing.
  • Day 7: Your splint is removed at your one-week follow-up, and much of the initial swelling and bruising subsides.

Dr. Fishman treated her with a variety of Rhinoplasty techniques to smooth her nasal bridge and gently reshape and support her nasal tip.

Returning to Work & Social Events

  • Work (1-2 weeks post-op): If your job is non-strenuous (e.g., office work), you can typically return after one week. If you have a more active job, you may need up to two weeks.
  • Being Socially Presentable (2-3 weeks post-op): Most swelling and bruising improve significantly within two weeks, and makeup can help camouflage any residual discoloration. While you may not feel “camera-ready,” you’ll look much more like yourself by the three-week mark.
  • Special Events & Weddings (6+ weeks post-op): If you have a major event, such as a wedding or a big social gathering, we recommend at least 6-8 weeks of recovery time to ensure your nose is settled, and swelling is minimal. For optimal results, planning surgery 3-6 months before your event is ideal.

Long-Term Recovery & Final Results

While the most noticeable swelling resolves within the first month, subtle swelling can persist for several months, especially at the nasal tip. Full refinement of your nose shape can take up to a year.
