BEST PEARLS FOR RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

Recovery is an important key to having the best results after surgery. Rhinoplasty recovery usually involves 1-2 weeks of social downtime, and several months for final healing and results. During your recovery it is important to listen to your physician, follow your post operative instructions, and ask questions if you have any concerns or notice any changes.

What to expect after a rhinoplasty procedure?

After surgery you will have a few follow up visits with your physician to clean the nasal pathways and make sure things are healing correctly. During the initial healing process, you will experience a lot of swelling and maybe some bruising around the nose, cheeks, and under eye area but this should be reduced after the first week and you will be ready to step out into the public again.

Majority of the swelling will be gone after 2-3 weeks, and you will feel comfortable attending social events again. You will still be in your recovery period, so it is still important that you are following post care instructions. In the first couple of weeks of recovery you physician will see you in their office for follow up visits. During these visits your physician will examine your nose inside and out, clean any old, dried blood that is present, and they may do a little suction to help clear the nose so that you are able to breathe better.

What should I do to prepare myself for the surgery and have a good recovery?

Before surgery gather all the materials that you will need for recovery so that you have them handy when it’s time to use them. You will need items like Q-tips, Vaseline or Aquaphor, saline spray, Afrin decongestant spray, and Benadryl. Do not use the items until instructed to do so. Improper use of materials can result in a delayed recovery or other issues.

What medications should I take?

Your physician will prescribe some medicines for you to take and let you know when and how often you should be taking them. Your doctor may prescribe pain medicine, antibiotics, and steroids for you to take. You may also take Tylenol along with the prescribed steroids to help minimize swelling. Most people will not have to take any medications after the first unless the physician says otherwise.
