Description
This 46-year-old woman came to our practice with an interest in treating a small bump on her forehead. She developed it ~20 years prior, and it has remained roughly the same size for years. The growth did not hurt, drain, itch, or change color. The patient was bothered by the appearance of the lesion.
Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman diagnosed the patient with an osteoma, or a small growth of bone at her forehead; and treated it with a surgical procedure performed through an incision hidden in the patient’s hair. The patient had her treatment awake and relaxed with by-mouth relaxing medications and laughing gas; avoiding general anesthesia allowed her for a shorter recovery, and a very comfortable treatment. She is shown 4 months after treatment with a great outcome and excellent healing.
Osteomas are benign, non-cancerous, growths of bone that can grown on the bone of the skull, forehead, or inside the nasal sinuses. They are usually slow growing and painless, and can bother people with their appearance. While no one knows why osteomas develop, most scientists think genetics or trauma can contribute to their development.
