Microneedling

Microneedling skincare Atlanta

Skin rejuvenation encompasses lots of different treatments at our practice, and they target different concerns.  Microneedling is a great option for individuals looking to improve the texture and appearance of their skin without a prolonged recovery.  Microneedling makes the skin look smoother and more vibrant, and improves the appearance of acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and fine lines and wrinkles.  Our expert medical aesthetician uses microneedling as part of a skin rejuvenation program, and to stimulate collagen production as part of aging prevention.

Microneedling in Atlanta, GA

I had my first Microneedling performed two weeks ago, and my skin is still glowing! The Aviva staff is extremely skilled, kind and highly knowledgeable. I’m looking forward to future appointments!

Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a skin resurfacing treatment which is on the less invasive end of the resurfacing treatment spectrum.  Microneedling uses tiny pin-point needles to create small punctures in the upper layer of the skin.  The body’s healing responses closes these punctures by generating new collagen and elastin in the skin.  After microneedling, the skin looks smoother, more plump, and more youthful.  Furthermore, microneedling improves the texture and appearance of acne scars and surgical scars; shrinks pore size; and helps skincare products penetrate the skin more deeply and effectively.

The Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling improves the skin’s texture and overall appearance and health, and both Dr. Fishman and our staff recommend it frequently for skin rejuvenation.  Our medical aesthetician, Alla, also enjoys doing microneedling for acne scars, surgical scars, and acne.  “By stimulating new collagen formation and creating a controlled amount of injury in the skin, I’m asking the skin to heal itself–and get the bonus of a little extra collagen and plumpness along the way,” says Alla.  Alla recommends microneedling treatments for their anti-aging properties; “much like exfoliation, microneedling should be a regular, maintenance treatment,” she says, relating her most common treatment areas are the face, neck, and chest.  She commonly recommends a series of microneedling treatments for surgical scars, saying it is important to start treatments within a few weeks of removing sutures for best scar healing results.  Likewise, acne scars get improvement from microneedling, says Alla, explaining that the smoothing effect of new collagen helps acne scars appears less deep and more blended into the surrounding skin.

How are Microneedling treatments performed?

After a thorough analysis of treatment benefits and risks, our staff prepares the patient for microneedling treatments by taking clinical photographs and applying topical numbing or freezing cream to ensure comfort.  Some areas may require small injections of numbing medications for a more thorough and comfortable treatment. Once the skin is numbed and cleaned, our aesthetician precisely uses the 12-pin microneedling pen over the face or neck to clear up the skin and promote tightness via collagen and elastin production. The process takes about 45 minutes once the microneedling begins and about an hour in total.

We commonly combine microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to help patients recover more quickly and to boost the collagen-stimulating benefits of microneedling. PRP injections uses the growth factor-rich platelets from your own blood to boost healing in treated areas. Our staff also recommends using the Celluma LED light therapy after microneedling treatments to help reduce redness and decrease treatment downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

In short, no.  Microneedling is an essentially painless treatment.  Before the treatment, we apply a topical lidocaine numbing cream to the skin for 20-30 minutes, and once this takes full effect, microneedling feels like a mild buzzing or light pressure sensation.

Our staff employs their expertise to make microneedling treatments painless, safe, and thoroughly effective.

Downtime for microneedling is minimal, and consists of skin redness, mild and short-lived swelling, and occasional light flaking.  Mild redness and swelling usually persist for 1-2 days, and the treated skin can tolerate makeup 24 hours after the microneedling treatment.  Some patients experience light peeling or flaking 3-5 days after treatment.  Patients occasionally report intermittent itching and no pain during microneedling recovery.  Recovery tends to become shorter with subsequent microneedling treatments.

After the first treatment, the skin undergoes lots of healing to recover from the microneedling. Once the redness diminishes, the new skin that forms is visibly tighter and brighter. Acne subsides more effectively after the first treatment as the microneedling limits oil production in the face, meaning less white and blackheads!

The full effects are seen at about 4 weeks, so we recommend treatments every 4-6 weeks to keep your skin looking young and fresh. After several treatments, the skin holds its new elasticity and tightness for longer periods of time so you can take more time in-between sessions.

The main risks are swelling and bruising, however, microneedling is fairly noninvasive. Beyond the temporary irritation, there is a small risk of bleeding from the injections immediately after the treatment. As with any medical procedure involving breaking the skin, there is a slight risk of infection, but our staff uses sterile equipment and takes every measure to clean the skin to prevent infection.

The number of sesssions is always up to the individual and our provider’s skin initial skin analysis. After seeing your provider for the first treatment, we will typically recommend 2 additional treatments spaced out by 4-6 weeks to see the largest benefit. We also offer packages of PRP injections alongside the microneedling on the same timeline. Beyond the first three treatments, many patients continue their upkeep with sessions every 3-4 months or as needed. For improvements to active acne, multiple packages may be required to help keep the complexion clear.

Dull, lifeless skin is a common concern, and is often worsened with stress, aging, illness, and a suboptimal diet.  Sun damage also make our skin look older and have uneven pigmentation; and with age, our body creates progressively less collagen, leaving the skin thinner and more prone to fine lines.  Skin resurfacing procedures–such as lasers, Morpheus, and chemical peels–help improve the skin’s texture, and microneedling offers a great resurfacing option with little recovery and downtime.

Apply Epionce Essential Recovery Kit immediately after procedure. This recovery kit minimizes downtime and restores your skin’s barrier function quickly. Directions for use include the following:

Immediately Post Treatment: Cold water saturation compresses may be used immediately post procedure to help reduce inflammation and soothe skin before applying post treatment products. Apply 2-4 pumps of Priming Oil. Apply a generous application of Enriched Firming Mask. Do not rinse.

First 24 Hours: Continue to apply Priming Oil followed by visible coating of Enriched Firming Mask as often as needed on dry/sensitive areas to provide soothing hydration. Do not rinse mask; allow to absorb into the skin. Do not allow skin to feel tight and/or dried out. Sterile cold-water saturated compresses may be applied, if additional cooling sensation is desired.

Day 2-3: May cleanse with Milky Lotion Cleanser. Apply 2-4 pumps of Priming Oil. Follow with a generous application of Renewal Calming Cream as needed to keep skin hydrated. For additional hydration, apply Enriched Firming Mask over Renewal Calming Cream. On Day 3 if skin is not sensitive, resume normal use of sunscreen.

Day 4: May cleanse with Milky Lotion Cleanser. Apply Renewal Calming Cream as needed. Apply Priming Oil and/or Enriched Firming Mask as needed for hydration and to calm remaining inflammation.

After Skin Heels: After skin is re-epithelialized, begin or continue to use Epionce cleanser and renewal facial product according to skin type. Renewal Calming Cream application may be continued as needed to boost hydration and barrier repair. Wait at least 10 days post-procedure or until skin is no longer sensitive to add Lytic Step into regimen or as directed by supervising physician.

  • Light peeling may start 3-5 days after treatment, though not every patient may experience this. Do not rub, pick, exfoliate, or irritate the treated areas.
  • Most commonly, redness and swelling resolves over one to a few days after treatment; though some patients may note swelling persisting for a longer period of time after treatment.
  • Limit physical activity and exposure to excessive heat (including saunas, fires, etc.) and UV light for 5-7 days after treatment.
  • Tylenol may be taken as needed for soreness or discomfort.

FOR FACIAL AND NECK PROCEDURES:

  • Make-up may be applied 24 hours after the procedure to cover any redness or bruising. Cleanse your makeup applicators and brushes thoroughly before resuming makeup. Make-up may be used over Epionce products.
  • Avoid alcohol for 2-3 days after this procedure. Drinking alcohol can negatively impact healing and can cause thinning of the blood, bleeding, and/or bruising.
  • Allow for 6-8 weeks of healing to see your final treatment results.
