Drains AFTER Facelift Surgery
Recovery after facelift or neck lift surgery always involves some degree of swelling and bruising, independent of technique, surgeon, and your individual anatomic factors. “I
As we age, factors like stress, weight changes, and hormonal shifts contribute to visible signs of aging — wrinkles, sagging skin, and jowls. Many of our patients express that these changes make them feel they look older, more tired, or less energetic than they truly are.
With dynamic careers, exciting hobbies, and busy family lives, it’s no surprise that men and women in Atlanta and beyond choose facelift and neck lift to align their outward appearance with their vibrant inner selves, helping them to put their best face forward!
The aging process is inevitable. For many, fine lines begin silently developing around the late 20s to early 30s and gradually deepen into wrinkles with each passing year. The human face also loses volume due to changes in bony structure, the fatty tissues of the face, and decreased collagen and elastin production; these changes lead to sagging, lax tissues and skin within the face and neck.

Face and neck lifts help patients regain a more youthful appearance by diminishing telltale signs of aging, such as jowls and lax, sagging skin. While these procedures share some similarities, there are key differences between the two which make them optimal for different patients.
In general, a facelift repositions into a more youthful, higher position the facial volume that has slipped down into the jawline and jowls. This treatment is performed by lifting and supporting the muscles of the face and the connective tissues that envelops these muscles; the connective tissue is called the SMAS. The volume which has slipped from the cheekbones into the jawline creates excess fulness in the lower face; this volume is lifted back up over the cheekbones and upper cheeks—eliminating jowls, excess tissue around the smile lines, and loose skin within the face. Facelifting incisions are placed within the natural creases between the ear and the face, thus camouflaging the ultimate scars.
In contrast, the neck lift corrects the appearance of a “turkey neck” – excess skin that sags and wrinkles around and in front of the neck, excess fat under the chin, and neck muscle separation which can lead to vertical platysmal muscle bands. The neck lift addresses excess under-the-chin and jawline fat, droopy skin , and muscle separation, with an individualized neck lift plan created for each patient. Incisions are hidden below the chin and behind the ears, making them almost impossible to find once healed.
I look like I'm 40 again according to a friend's husband. I visited an out of town friend who knew I'd had the facelift and she came rushing back into my room to say, "I'd forgotten you had that surgery! I was thinking you looked so refreshed and then I remembered! You look great!

Despite the introduction of non-surgical alternatives with dermal fillers and other injectables, the surgical approach to age reversal remains incredibly popular. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, an estimated 73,170 facelifts and nearly 27,500 neck lifts were completed in 2018, making these respectively the 7th and 11th most popular plastic surgery procedures. A surgical face and neck lift reposition sagging tissues and remove excess fat and skin in a long-lasting manner, and lead to natural, refreshed results without the need for frequent upkeep.

Thanks to plastic surgery innovations, patients looking to permanently reduce the signs of facial aging have plenty of options. During your consultation with Dr. Fishman, our experienced facial plastic surgeon will evaluate your current appearance, review your aesthetic goals and identify the best facelift technique to help you put your best, most confident face forward. Often, the patients who enjoy the best results are individuals who:
Not sure if you need a full facelift? Mini facelifts allow patients with mild to moderate skin laxity to proactively address sagging skin before gravity takes over. This approach to facelift uses shorter incisions to tighten relaxed tissue around the cheeks, diminishing the appearance of skin laxity while helping patients look more alert and rejuvenated.
A face lift surgery, facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that gently lifts and tightens facial skin and underlying tissues, achieving a youthful, refreshed look.
The results of a facelift can last 10 to 15 years, allowing you to enjoy a rejuvenated look that stands the test of time. However, individual longevity varies based on skin type, lifestyle, and genetics.
An approximate cost for a facelift surgery in our practice is $14,000-16,000. Costs vary based on individual patient needs and other procedures being performed concurrently. For your individualized treatment plan and pricing information, please contact us to schedule your consultation.
During the two weeks following surgery, patients will experience some degree of swelling and bruising. We recommend applying cold compresses to the treatment areas as well as taking oral medication to manage discomfort and swelling.
We instruct surgical patients to wear a compressive garment or “chin strap” during the first week after the face and necklift procedure. While patients can begin walking the day of surgery, we recommend avoiding all other strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 3-4 weeks after your surgery. As Dr. Fishman monitors your recovery, she’ll be able to give you more personalized direction throughout the healing process.
Discomfort is common after surgery, but it is usually well-managed with prescribed medication. Many patients describe it as more of a tightness or soreness, which improves within a few days.
Initial improvements can be seen within a few weeks, but the final results become more apparent as swelling decreases, often taking a few months for the complete effect to be visible.
Like any surgery, a facelift carries risks, including bruising, infection, scarring, and nerve damage. However, these complications are rare, especially when performed by a skilled, board-certified surgeon.
Yes, many patients choose to combine a facelift with other procedures such as a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery to achieve a more harmonious and comprehensive rejuvenation.
Preparation typically involves lifestyle adjustments such as quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol, and following specific pre-surgery instructions from your surgeon to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery.
Yes, facelifts are usually performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation, ensuring a comfortable and pain-free experience during the surgery.
Selecting a skilled and experienced board-certified surgeon is key to achieving natural results that enhance your features without appearing overly tight or artificial.
A deep plane facelift is an advanced technique that lifts deeper facial tissues for more natural and long-lasting results, avoiding the stretched look sometimes associated with traditional facelifts.
While many patients enjoy long-lasting results from one facelift, some opt for a second or even third procedure over the course of their life to maintain their rejuvenated appearance.
Most patients can resume light activities after two weeks, though strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several more weeks to allow for complete healing.
It’s essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in facial procedures. Reviewing before-and-after photos and discussing expectations during a consultation can help ensure the best results
A well-done facelift should leave you looking refreshed and natural, with results that enhance your appearance rather than drastically change it.
There is no ideal age for a facelift, as suitability depends more on the condition of your skin and tissues than on your chronological age. Many patients undergo the procedure in their 40s to 60s
Swelling is typically at its peak during the first week after surgery but will gradually subside over the following weeks and months.
Following your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery and optimal results. Rest, hydration, and gentle care of the treated areas are key during the recovery period.
While non-surgical treatments like fillers and skin tightening procedures can enhance your appearance, they do not achieve the same long-lasting results as a surgical facelift.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, using sunscreen, and following a good skincare routine can help prolong the results of your facelift and keep your skin looking its best.
Most patients take one to two weeks off work to allow for initial recovery, although the timing may vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the nature of your job.
Avoid smoking, alcohol, and certain medications that can increase the risk of complications. Your surgeon will provide a comprehensive list of things to avoid to ensure a successful procedure.
A properly performed facelift should not affect your ability to express emotions naturally. The goal is to enhance your appearance while preserving your facial expressiveness.
Significant weight fluctuations can affect the results of your facelift, so it’s recommended to maintain a stable weight for optimal and long-lasting results.
By restoring a more youthful and vibrant appearance, a facelift can enhance your self-esteem and help you feel more confident in your daily life.
