Description
This 34-year-old man had felt self-conscious about the appearance of his too-prominent ears for most of his life. Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman treated him with otoplasty, or surgical ear-shaping, to contour the ears and bring them closer to the head. The otoplasty surgery involved trimming a small piece of cartilage at the concha (or seashell-shaped bowl of cartilage just behind the ear canal) to decrease the concha’s height and bring the ear closer to the head. Dr. Fishman also contoured the earlobes to tuck them closer inwards. The patient shares his result at just one day after surgery, and is thrilled about his treatment result. His ears will become less swollen and red over the next 1-2 weeks and show final healing result closer to 4-6 months after surgery.
While children treated with otoplasty do best with general anesthesia (or being asleep in the operating room), most adults can have otoplasty surgery with the help of relaxing by-mouth medications, laughing gas, and injected numbing medications. This patient had his otoplasty surgery while awake and relaxed with by-mouth relaxing medications and laughing gas in the comfort of our luxurious clinic, and had a great experience.
