Description
This 4-day-old boy was brought in by his parents with concerns of a misshapen left ear; the ear had an extra fold of cartilage just behind the ear canal (this extra cartilage is called a conchal crus). This had not improved since birth. It is important to treat as the conchal crus can pull the ear forward and contribute to a prominent or “stuck out” ear later in life. Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman diagnosed the baby with congenital ear deformity, and treated him with a 4-week-long course of Earwell non-surgical newborn ear therapy. The patient is shown with a 100% correction and a beautiful outcome after completing treatment. This non-invasive treatment allows for progressive and painless reshaping or molding of the ear, reforming the ear cartilage permanently.
Earwell newborn ear correction is a highly effective treatment which allows Dr. Fishman to treat many types of newborn ear deformities. It works to correct congenital ear deformities in more than 90% of cases, and allows patients to avoid otoplasty surgery. The non-surgical newborn correction treatment is most effective if started within the first few weeks of life, as the baby’s ear cartilage is most pliable during this time. As the baby grows to 6-8 weeks old, the maternal estrogens which make ear cartilage soft and moldable gradually decrease, and the chance of successful ear correction drops off.
