Description
This 44-year-old woman came to our practice with a concern of a small firm bump on the upper part of her left ear, and wanted this removed. She reported ear-pinning surgery with general anesthesia at age 13 years at a different practice; the bump did not appear to be related to previous surgery. Our facial plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman removed this small accessory growth of cartilage via a small incision hidden at uppermost border of the ear rim for best scar camouflage.
While children treated with otoplasty do best with general anesthesia (or being asleep in the operating room), most adults can have otoplasty surgery with the help of relaxing by-mouth medications, laughing gas, and injected numbing medications. This patient had her otoplasty surgery in combination with another surgical procedure while awake and relaxed in the comfort of our luxurious clinic, and described a very comfortable experience.
