Description
This 2-week-old boy was brought in by his parents for concerns of ear deformity. The parents reported the ears looked folded over at birth, and had not improved since then. Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman diagnosed the baby with a bilateral (both-sided) congenital ear deformity, and treated him with a 3-month-long course of non-surgical newborn ear therapy using the Earwell correction system. After reshaping the cartilage, Dr. Fishman removed a small amount of skin excess at the uppermost parts of the ears. The patient is shown with an excellent correction and a beautiful treatment outcome after completing treatment; his ears look more symmetric and open after treatment. This reshaping treatment allows for progressive and painless molding of the ear, reforming the ear cartilage permanently.
Earwell newborn ear correction is a highly effective treatment which allows Dr. Fishman to treat many types of newborn ear deformities. It works to correct congenital ear deformities in more than 90% of cases, and allows patients to avoid otoplasty surgery. The non-surgical newborn correction treatment is most effective if started within the first few weeks of life, as the baby’s ear cartilage is most pliable during this time. As the baby grows to 6-8 weeks old, the maternal estrogens which make ear cartilage soft and moldable gradually decrease, and the chance of successful ear correction drops off.
