Microneedling FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Treatment

Microneedling treatment at Aviva Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, Atlanta GA

Microneedling at Aviva Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, serving Atlanta and Sandy Springs

Acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven texture are among the most common skin concerns we hear about at our Atlanta practice. Patients have often tried products. Some have seen results. Many feel like they have reached a plateau.

Microneedling is one option I often discuss with patients who want to improve their skin’s texture and overall appearance without surgery. It isn’t the answer to every concern, but for the right patient, it can make a meaningful difference. I want patients to understand what a treatment can and cannot do before they begin, so here are the questions we hear most often at Aviva.

Microneedling isn't about masking what's bothering you.
It's about giving your skin what it needs to improve from within.

Who May Benefit From Microneedling?

Microneedling is a versatile treatment that addresses a broad range of concerns. You may be a strong candidate if you are noticing one or more of the following:

Fine lines or early signs of aging around the eyes, mouth, or forehead that topical products have not resolved
Acne scars or depressed scarring that has persisted despite consistent skincare
Enlarged pores, rough texture, or dullness that leaves skin looking tired or uneven
A desire to improve skin quality without surgery or extended downtime
A Note from Dr. Fishman

Microneedling is one of the few treatments that performs well across a broad range of skin tones, including deeper complexions that may not be ideal candidates for certain laser treatments. Unlike heat-based devices, traditional microneedling stimulates collagen mechanically, which makes it a genuinely useful option for many of the patients we see here in Atlanta and Sandy Springs.

Is Microneedling Safe for All Skin Types?

Microneedling can be an option for many skin types and tones, including deeper complexions. Traditional microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries without relying on heat, which can make it an appealing alternative to certain energy-based treatments for patients concerned about changes in pigmentation.

That does not mean it is appropriate for everyone. Active skin infections, certain inflammatory conditions, a history of problematic scarring, and other individual factors can change the recommendation. I believe the safest approach starts with examining your skin, reviewing your medical history, and choosing the right treatment settings for you.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

This is one of the first questions we hear from patients considering microneedling, and it is a fair one. The short answer: for most people, it is quite manageable.

Before your treatment, we apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable throughout the session. Once it has taken effect, most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure, vibration, or a light scratching feeling as the device moves across the skin.

  • Topical numbing cream is applied 30 to 45 minutes before treatment to minimize discomfort
  • Mild pressure or light scratching is how most patients describe the sensation during the procedure
  • Certain areas such as the forehead and around the mouth may feel more sensitive; our team adjusts throughout the session as needed

Most treatments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area. Our team will guide you through the process and make adjustments as needed to keep you comfortable from start to finish.

What Is the Recovery Like After Microneedling?

One of the reasons microneedling is such a practical treatment option is its predictable, manageable recovery. Here is what most patients can expect:

Immediately After

Your skin will likely appear pink or red, similar to a mild sunburn. Some warmth, tightness, and mild swelling are normal and expected immediately following treatment.

24 to 48 Hours

Most patients notice redness improving significantly within a day or two. Deeper treatments may take a few additional days. Keep your skincare routine gentle and stay well hydrated.

Several Days

Some dryness and light flaking can occur as the skin heals. This is temporary and resolves on its own. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days.

Four to Six Weeks

Many patients begin noticing visible improvement in texture and overall skin quality around this point. Collagen production takes time, and benefits continue building in the weeks following treatment.

A Note from Dr. Fishman

If you have an event on the calendar, plan to schedule your microneedling treatment at least one week beforehand. That gives your skin time to move through the initial redness phase and show the refreshed quality that follows. Planning ahead makes a real difference.

Can Microneedling Help With Acne Scars?

Yes. Improving the appearance of acne scars is one of the most common reasons patients seek microneedling at our Atlanta practice. When acne heals, it can leave behind depressed or indented scars due to changes in the skin's collagen structure. Microneedling stimulates new collagen production, which can gradually soften the appearance of certain scars and create a smoother, more even surface.

It is important to have realistic expectations here. Not all acne scars respond equally to treatment, and deeper scarring may require additional sessions or a combination approach. During your consultation, we will evaluate your skin and discuss what kind of improvement is realistic for you.

A Note from Dr. Fishman

Acne scarring is one of the trickier concerns to treat because scar depth and type vary so much from patient to patient. Microneedling is genuinely effective for many patients, particularly those with moderate rolling or shallow boxcar scars. For deeper scarring, we often talk through a multi-treatment approach to get the best possible result.

Microneedling as Part of a Broader Skin Plan

Microneedling can be effective on its own. It may also fit into a broader approach to skin rejuvenation. For patients with multiple concerns, combining or alternating treatments can address different layers and aspects of the skin at the right time.

Chemical Peels

Targets surface pigmentation, tone irregularities, and texture, complementing the deeper collagen-stimulating effects of microneedling.

Laser & IPL

Appropriate for sun damage, persistent pigmentation, or deeper resurfacing goals. Can be combined with microneedling in a planned sequence.

Medical-Grade Skincare

A strong at-home routine supports and extends results between treatments, maintaining the improvements microneedling sets in motion.

For patients ready to take skin rejuvenation further, we also offer Morpheus8, a radiofrequency microneedling treatment that combines mechanical needling with targeted RF energy for deeper remodeling. The patient photographs below show results after a combination of Morpheus8 and IPL photofacial. They do not represent results from traditional microneedling alone.

Not all combinations should be done simultaneously, and sequencing makes a meaningful difference in outcomes. We take time in consultations to build a treatment plan that makes sense for your skin and your schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling works best as a series rather than a single session. For most patients, we recommend starting with three treatments spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. This gives your skin time to heal and begin producing new collagen between appointments. If you are treating deeper acne scars or more significant texture concerns, additional sessions may be beneficial. After completing an initial series, maintenance treatments every three to six months can help sustain your results. Everyone's skin is different, and we will help you determine the right schedule based on your individual concerns and how your skin responds.
You may notice your skin looks brighter and smoother once the initial redness subsides. The more meaningful improvements develop gradually. Your body needs time to produce new collagen and remodel the treated skin. Most patients begin noticing changes in texture and overall skin quality around four to six weeks after treatment, with continued improvement over the following months. Patients treating acne scars or deeper concerns typically see the most significant changes after completing a full series. Microneedling is an investment in your skin's long-term health rather than an overnight transformation.
If you have a few minor breakouts, we can often proceed with treatment while carefully avoiding any active, inflamed blemishes. However, if you are experiencing a more significant breakout, we may recommend waiting until your skin has calmed down before scheduling. Microneedling over active, inflamed acne can increase irritation and the risk of spreading bacteria. Our team evaluates your skin before every appointment and will always recommend the safest approach for where your skin is that day.
We generally recommend avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours following treatment. Your skin is temporarily more sensitive, and giving it time to begin healing minimizes the risk of irritation. Once your skin has calmed, you can gradually return to your usual routine, using clean brushes and gentle products while recovery continues. During the first several days, also avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, and harsh scrubs. We provide personalized aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to use and what to skip following each session.
For the first several days following treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sweating, saunas, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure while your skin heals. Temporarily set aside retinoids, exfoliating acids, and harsh scrubs. Focus on gentle cleansing, good hydration, and the soothing products our team recommends. Once your skin has fully recovered, you can return to your regular routine. Sun protection is especially important during recovery and remains one of the best things you can do to maintain your results long-term.

Better skin starts with a plan that fits your skin.

At Aviva, we take the time to understand your concerns before recommending any treatment. Whether microneedling is the right fit or part of a larger plan, we will help you find an approach that makes sense for your goals and your life.
