PRP or platelet rich plasma treatments have grown in popularity in the field of aesthetic medicine. While often associated with facial treatments, PRP can also be used for sexual health. Read on to learn more about the procedure.
WHAT IS PRP?
PRP refers to platelet rich plasma, and essentially is the nutrients and growth factors in our blood, in a super concentrated formulation. The treatment centers on the human body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate tissues. PRP requires a quick blood draw, followed by processing of the blood to separate out the red and white blood cells to concentrate the platelets. Platelets are tiny cell-like particles within our blood that are important in clotting and the healing of tissue after an injury. They contain lots of growth factors and various other signals important in tissue regeneration.
HOW DOES PRP IMPROVE SEXUAL HEALTH?
PRP can help improve the look and feel of labial and vaginal tissue. This treatment helps improve low sexual drive by improving sensation in the tissues of the labia, clitoris, G-spot, and penis. PRP also helps to improve vaginal lubrication and stimulates collagen formation within the vaginal tissues, helping with vaginal tightening. PRP injections can help decrease pain during intercourse and some cases of mild urinary stress incontinence from vaginal and labial atrophy.Â
AM I CANDIDATE FOR PRP TREATMENT?
Any woman hoping to improve her sexual health and function can be a good candidate for PRP treatment. In fact, we often suggest adding the treatment to our patients undergoing a labiaplasty or Votiva treatment. A history of severe allergic responses, disorders of the blood or bone marrow systems, and medications within the blood may make individuals not good candidates for PRP treatment.
ARE THERE RISKS?
As PRP injections consist of substances from your own blood, minimizing the risk of rejection and infection. Still, as with any injection, there is risk of pain at injection site and nerve damage.
