Labiaplasty Recovery: What to Expect After Intimate Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty is an increasingly popular procedure designed to improve both the appearance and comfort of the labia, or the folds of skin around the vagina opening. Many women seek this surgery to address concerns related to too-long or asymmetric labia, which can cause discomfort during daily activities, exercise, sexual intercourse, or even while wearing certain types of clothing. Whether you’re looking to enhance aesthetics or resolve physical irritation, labiaplasty can offer life-changing results. At Aviva Plastic Surgery, we’re here to guide you through what to expect during your recovery process, ensuring you feel confident every step of the way.

Labiaplasty Recovery: What to Expect After Intimate Plastic Surgery

Post-Procedure Discomfort and Pain Management

Labiaplasty is a procedure we most commonly do in our clinic, with the help of by-mouth relaxing medications, laughing gas, and injected long-lasting numbing medicine, explains our surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman. Following treatment, we send patients home with instruction to rest and apply cold compresses to the labia and pelvis. “Most patients are numb for 4-6 hours after their procedure,” explains Dr. Fishman, noting that the first evening after treatment tends to be the most uncomfortable part of recovery, with most patients reporting a stinging sensation along incision lines; this usually improves significantly overnight. This said, most patients often experience mild discomfort rather than significant pain; and this can be easily managed with cold compresses, and over-the-counter pain relief options like Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin (ibuprofen). These measures are also helpful to manage swelling following your surgery. The vast majority of patients seem to come off the Tylenol and Motrin 2-3 days after labiaplasty, says Dr. Fishman, noting this indicates a short-lived amount of discomfort after the treatment.

Swelling and Bleeding

Swelling is a very common and normal part of the healing process after labiaplasty. You can expect significant swelling during the first few days, which typically begins to subside around day 5 post-surgery. While this initial swelling might seem alarming, it’s important to remember that it is a natural response and should progressively improve.  Cold compresses, Tylenol, Motrin, and staying off your feet and pelvis (avoiding prolonged standing and sitting) are very important to manage swelling and make for a smooth recovery experience, says Dr. Fishman.

In terms of bleeding, many patients experience 3-5 days of light bleeding, which is comparable to a moderate menstrual period. This is completely normal and should not be a cause for concern.  We usually recommend applying the antibiotic ointment Bacitrin to the labiaplasty incisions 2-3 times a day, wearing a thin pad or pantyliner, and using a perineal bottle (also called “Peri” bottle) to rinse the incisions while using the restroom to help manage bleeding.

Returning to Normal Activities

Although every patient’s recovery is unique, most women are able to resume light activities 5-6 days after labiaplasty treatment. We recommend avoiding prolonged sitting, standing, and driving during the initial 5 day healing period.  Most patients return to work within the first week after surgery.  It’s important to avoid intense physical activity, heavy lifting, or exercise until Dr. Fishman gives you the green light—typically around 5-6 weeks post-surgery. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing and breathable fabrics to avoid rubbing and irritation during this time.

A Transformative Experience

Labiaplasty is often described as one of the most rewarding surgeries for our patients. Not only does it enhance comfort by reducing physical discomfort caused by elongated labia, but it can also have a significant impact on one’s self-confidence. Many women report feeling more at ease in their bodies, happier with their appearance, and much more self-confident following this procedure.
