Microneedling at Aviva Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, serving Atlanta and Sandy Springs
Acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven texture are among the most common skin concerns we hear about at our Atlanta practice. Patients have often tried products. Some have seen results. Many feel like they have reached a plateau.
Microneedling is one option I often discuss with patients who want to improve their skin’s texture and overall appearance without surgery. It isn’t the answer to every concern, but for the right patient, it can make a meaningful difference. I want patients to understand what a treatment can and cannot do before they begin, so here are the questions we hear most often at Aviva.
Microneedling isn't about masking what's bothering you.
It's about giving your skin what it needs to improve from within.
Microneedling is a versatile treatment that addresses a broad range of concerns. You may be a strong candidate if you are noticing one or more of the following:
Microneedling is one of the few treatments that performs well across a broad range of skin tones, including deeper complexions that may not be ideal candidates for certain laser treatments. Unlike heat-based devices, traditional microneedling stimulates collagen mechanically, which makes it a genuinely useful option for many of the patients we see here in Atlanta and Sandy Springs.
Microneedling can be an option for many skin types and tones, including deeper complexions. Traditional microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries without relying on heat, which can make it an appealing alternative to certain energy-based treatments for patients concerned about changes in pigmentation.
That does not mean it is appropriate for everyone. Active skin infections, certain inflammatory conditions, a history of problematic scarring, and other individual factors can change the recommendation. I believe the safest approach starts with examining your skin, reviewing your medical history, and choosing the right treatment settings for you.
This is one of the first questions we hear from patients considering microneedling, and it is a fair one. The short answer: for most people, it is quite manageable.
Before your treatment, we apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable throughout the session. Once it has taken effect, most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure, vibration, or a light scratching feeling as the device moves across the skin.
Most treatments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area. Our team will guide you through the process and make adjustments as needed to keep you comfortable from start to finish.

One of the reasons microneedling is such a practical treatment option is its predictable, manageable recovery. Here is what most patients can expect:
Your skin will likely appear pink or red, similar to a mild sunburn. Some warmth, tightness, and mild swelling are normal and expected immediately following treatment.
Most patients notice redness improving significantly within a day or two. Deeper treatments may take a few additional days. Keep your skincare routine gentle and stay well hydrated.
Some dryness and light flaking can occur as the skin heals. This is temporary and resolves on its own. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days.
Many patients begin noticing visible improvement in texture and overall skin quality around this point. Collagen production takes time, and benefits continue building in the weeks following treatment.
If you have an event on the calendar, plan to schedule your microneedling treatment at least one week beforehand. That gives your skin time to move through the initial redness phase and show the refreshed quality that follows. Planning ahead makes a real difference.
Yes. Improving the appearance of acne scars is one of the most common reasons patients seek microneedling at our Atlanta practice. When acne heals, it can leave behind depressed or indented scars due to changes in the skin's collagen structure. Microneedling stimulates new collagen production, which can gradually soften the appearance of certain scars and create a smoother, more even surface.
It is important to have realistic expectations here. Not all acne scars respond equally to treatment, and deeper scarring may require additional sessions or a combination approach. During your consultation, we will evaluate your skin and discuss what kind of improvement is realistic for you.
Acne scarring is one of the trickier concerns to treat because scar depth and type vary so much from patient to patient. Microneedling is genuinely effective for many patients, particularly those with moderate rolling or shallow boxcar scars. For deeper scarring, we often talk through a multi-treatment approach to get the best possible result.
Microneedling can be effective on its own. It may also fit into a broader approach to skin rejuvenation. For patients with multiple concerns, combining or alternating treatments can address different layers and aspects of the skin at the right time.
Targets surface pigmentation, tone irregularities, and texture, complementing the deeper collagen-stimulating effects of microneedling.
Appropriate for sun damage, persistent pigmentation, or deeper resurfacing goals. Can be combined with microneedling in a planned sequence.
A strong at-home routine supports and extends results between treatments, maintaining the improvements microneedling sets in motion.
For patients ready to take skin rejuvenation further, we also offer Morpheus8, a radiofrequency microneedling treatment that combines mechanical needling with targeted RF energy for deeper remodeling. The patient photographs below show results after a combination of Morpheus8 and IPL photofacial. They do not represent results from traditional microneedling alone.

Not all combinations should be done simultaneously, and sequencing makes a meaningful difference in outcomes. We take time in consultations to build a treatment plan that makes sense for your skin and your schedule.
Better skin starts with a plan that fits your skin.
Whether you want to address acne scars, fine lines, or uneven texture, a consultation is the best place to start. We see patients from Atlanta, Sandy Springs, and the surrounding area, and we take time to evaluate your skin before recommending any treatment.
