Newborn Ear Shaping Without Surgery: EarWell vs. InfantEar

Many parents are surprised to notice a newborn’s ears looking slightly folded, pointed, or asymmetrical after birth. While this can feel alarming at first, these early ear shape differences called congenital ear deformities are quite common and, thankfully, highly treatable without surgery if addressed early.

At Aviva Plastic Surgery, Dr. Inessa Fishman offers two proven, non-surgical solutions for infant ear correction: EarWell® and the newly added InfantEar™ system. Both devices use soft, custom-fitted molds to gently reshape the baby’s ears within the first weeks of life, harnessing the natural softness of newborn cartilage.

What Is Newborn Ear Correction?

Newborn ear correction also known as ear molding or splinting involves applying a specially designed, non-invasive device to the baby’s ear to guide its shape as the cartilage is still flexible. This treatment must be done within the first 6–8 weeks of life, when the ear cartilage is still soft due to maternal estrogen. After this window, the cartilage stiffens, and non-surgical options become less effective.

EarWell and InfantEar: What’s the Difference?

EarWell has long been a trusted option for non-surgical infant ear correction. InfantEar is a newer device Dr. Fishman has recently brought into her practice to expand treatment options. Both devices work on the same principle using gentle pressure to mold the ear but offer slightly different designs and flexibility depending on the baby’s anatomy and deformity type.

Dr. Fishman’s dual expertise with both systems ensures she can customize the best approach for each child.

Conditions Treated

Ear molding can effectively correct a wide range of congenital ear issues, including:

  • Prominent ears (stick out more than normal)
  • Lidding or folded ears
  • Stahl’s ear (a pointed upper ear)
  • Constricted ears
  • Cryptotia (part of the ear buried under the scalp)
  • Other irregular shapes

When to Begin Treatment

Dr. Fishman generally recommends waiting 5–7 days after birth to allow the baby to naturally “unfold.” If the shape does not improve on its own, treatment should ideally begin by week 2 or 3 of life. The sooner treatment begins, the better the results and often avoiding the need for future corrective ear surgery.
