Description
This 29-year-old woman was bothered by her forehead bump. The bump had grown slowly over 10 years, and the patient had previous ultrasounds and X-rays that showed the bump to be a lipoma, or a growth of fat. The patient reported previous childhood trauma which gave her a large bruise, and wondered whether this resulted in the bump-like growth.
Our facial plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman removed the lipoma during an office-based surgery, with the patient awake and relaxed with by-mouth relaxing medications, laughing gas, and injected numbing medicine. The patient was very comfortable, listening to music and taking several small naps during her treatment. The lipoma was removed from under the skin of the forehead, using an incision carefully hidden in the scalp. The patient is able to style her hair 3 weeks after surgery, and her scar is already very difficult to find. She is very happy and reports feeling more self-confident without having to worry about the appearance of her forehead bump.
Lipomas are benign growths of fat, appearing in places where there is not usually a large amount of fat present. Lipomas tend to grow slowly, and are usually painless, although some patients may report irritation with rubbing or wearing hats. The main treatment for lipomas is surgical removal.
