Description

This 6-week-old boy was brought in by his mother with concerns of misshapen ears, which had not improved after birth.  His ears looked “scrunched up” and showed a constricted ear deformity on both sides; in this deformity, the ear looks “pinched together” and there is no properly formed depression between the outer curved helix and inner Y-shaped antihelix of the ear.  Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman diagnosed with baby with congenital ear deformity, and treated him with 4 weeks of non-surgical newborn ear correction.  This non-invasive treatment allows for gentle reshaping or molding of the external ear structures, reforming the cartilage of the ear in a permanent and painless way.

Earwell newborn ear correction is a highly effective treatment which allows Dr. Fishman to correct a large number of newborn ear deformities.  This treatment is most effective if started within the first 2-3 weeks of life, as the baby’s ear cartilage is most pliable during this time; maternal estrogen level are high within the baby’s system at this time, and this contributes to the soft pliability of the ear cartilage, making non-surgical correction possible.

About Newborn Ear Correction Procedure

Genetics, and ear positioning in the womb and shortly after birth can contribute to misfolded or prominent ears.  Misfolded and misshapen ears can be corrected with nonsurgical reshaping if treated early enough.  The newborn baby’s ear cartilage is soft and pliable due to high circulating levels of maternal estrogen, and this allows for reshaping or molding the ear without surgery or pain within the first few weeks of the child’s life. Our facial Plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman performs newborn ear correction by splinting or molding the baby’s ear with a device called Earwells, or custom designed splints. Treatment is performed over a period of 3-8+ weeks, and is painless and noninvasive.  The newborn ear correction treatment does not require anesthesia or sedation. With newborn ear splinting, Dr. Fishman successfully corrects misshapen or prominent ears in over 90% of newborn babies.Learn More About Newborn Ear Correction
