Description

This 44-year-old woman came to our practice interested in improving the appearance of her ears. She was bothered by asymmetry and overall excessive prominence, and has “been wanting to do something about them for years.”  She reported her Dad had similarly prominent ears, which correlates with previous findings of a genetic cause for ear prominence.

Our Facial Plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman treated her with otoplasty, or ear-shaping surgery, to contour the ears closer to the head.  The surgery was performed in the comfort of our clinic, with the patient awake and relaxed with by-mouth medications and laughing gas.  Our patient is shown just 1 day after surgery, with a great result and excellent healing progress; she says that she “absolutely loves her ears!” and we are thrilled with her results.

This otoplasty surgery involved reducing the height of the conchal bowl (seashell-shaped part of the ear cartilage just behind the ear canal) and placing permanent shaping sutures to deepen the antihelical fold (Y-shaped fold of cartilage within the upper third of the ear).

While children treated with otoplasty do best with general anesthesia (or being asleep in the operating room), most adults can have otoplasty surgery with the help of relaxing by-mouth medications, laughing gas, and injected numbing medications. This patient had his otoplasty surgery while awake and relaxed in the comfort of our luxurious clinic, and described a very comfortable experience.

About Otoplasty Procedure

Prominent or “stuck-out” ears can be a source of peer ridicule and teasing both for adults and children.  While protruding or misshapen ears may be corrected with non-surgical newborn correction, surgical correction is required for older children and adults.  Our facial plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman performs otoplasty surgery to correct abnormally protruding or misshapen ears, treating both children and adults. Otoplasty commonly involves the shaping of the ear cartilage and tucking the ear closer to a more aesthetically pleasing position with the head and facial outline.  Dr. Fishman does otoplasty surgery as a standalone procedure, or commonly combines it with rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty.Learn More About Otoplasty
