Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that causes a lot of swelling with the first month of healing. When you wake up from surgery you may wonder why there is tape on your nose, and this is actually a very important part of the healing process. Your surgeon will place the tape in the form or shape of the nose to help reduce swelling and maintain the shape or the new nose. You will continue to wear this tape for about two weeks as majority of the swelling will reside by then. For the first few days you will be asked to wear the tape for the full 24 hours. After your follow up, your physician will clear you to stop wearing the tape during the day and will ask that you continue to wear the tape at night.
The nose loves to swell after surgery and the swelling can cause movement or reshaping of the nose. Your surgeon will use tape to help minimize that swelling and maintain the shape of the nose. If you choose not to tape the nose, this may result in a deformed nose and need for more surgery.
Patients are okay to shower and clean their face with the tape, just be cautious not to get the tape too wet. There is usually an adhesive that helps hold the tape so that it does not come off easily.
Don’t worry it is not the end of the world. Always reach out to your physician if you have any questions or concerns. Some physicians will provide you with some tape or advise that you buy some tape and show you the proper technique for shaping. Please reach out to your physician about any concerns.
