Aging is an inevitable process that becomes more pronounced as you enter your 40s. Although unavoidable, this process can be deterred through “anti-aging hacks” that have been proven to reduce the speed of aging. Dr. Fishman recently discussed her best hacks for slowing the aging process with SheKnows.
Retinol cream
Brown spots on your skin can be caused by sun exposure as well as hyperpigmentation. Retinol and its cousin tretinoin are derived from vitamin A and can help to reduce the spotting on your skin. Dr. Fishman states both tretinoin and retinol are “noted to be very effective to improve skin exfoliation, thicken the dermis (the collagen-bearing undersurface of the skin), and improve the appearance of fine lines. Some of the most gorgeous skin in my office belongs to patients who are regular tretinoin and/or retinol users.”
Better posture
While it may seem too easy of a fix, standing straighter is an effective method in making your neck seem longer, waist thinner, and movements more graceful. Having better posture will not only make you look better, but also improve how you feel.
Eat More Apples
The old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is popular for a reason. Apples contain a fiber called pectin that detoxifies the body of waste products. Not only that, but apples are hydrating and thus can prevent wrinkles from forming. Other fruits similar to apples in these properties are avocados, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, strawberries, and papayas.
Vitamin C
“Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and an important component of skin building blocks,” says Dr. Fishman. Although ingesting vitamin C is helpful, there are topical options that allow for the rejuvenation of skin. Dr. Fishman recommends these serums as a part of your skincare routine in order to brighten up your face and improve the skin’s elasticity.
Healthy Exercise
A 2018 study found that moving your body regularly is effective in anti-aging. Not just rigorous activity, but only 30-45 minutes of regular exercise could keep the body decades younger.
Socializing
Maintaining healthy relationships and finding time for your friends is a hobby that many enjoy. Turns out, this hobby can also provide a more youthful glow to your face. Friendships can improve your quality of life as well as release feel-good neurochemicals in your brain.
Sun Protection
The sun’s harmful UV rays can be damaging to the skin. Applying sun protection as a part of your skincare routine is a crucial step to effective anti-aging. The earlier you start wearing sunscreen daily, the less aging your skin will experience.
While we cannot stop ourselves from again over time, these simple hacks will allow you to deter those wrinkles and seem more youthful.
