The Best Time of Year to Get a Lip Lift (And How to Plan Your Recovery)

You have researched the procedure. You know that a Surgical Lip Lift is the permanent solution to a long upper lip. You are ready to ditch the fillers and see your upper teeth again.
Precision Planning: Dr. Fishman marks the incision to hug the natural curves of your nose, lifting the lip while keeping the scar concealed.
But there is one lingering question: “When on earth do I have time to do this?

At Aviva Plastic Surgery, this is the most common question we hear from our busy professionals, parents, and on-camera clients. The good news is that while a lip lift is a surgery, the recovery is much more manageable than a facelift or rhinoplasty, if you plan it correctly.

Here is Dr. Fishman’s guide to timing your lip lift for minimal disruption and maximum privacy.

1. Understanding “Social” vs. “Physical” Downtime

To plan your surgery, you first need to understand the difference between being hurt and being visible.

  • Physical Recovery (Pain): Surprisingly easy. Most patients take Tylenol for a day or two and feel fine. You are not “bedridden.”
  • Social Recovery (Visibility): This is what you need to plan for. You will have fine sutures under your nose for about 5–7 days. You will also have swelling that typically peaks on Day 3 and subsides by Day 10.

The Golden Rule: Give yourself 7 days before you want to be seen by close friends, and 14 days before you want to be “camera ready” for a major meeting.

2. Why “Scarf Season” is the Most Popular Time

In Atlanta, late autumn and winter (November through February) are the busiest months for lip lifts.

  • The Camouflage Factor: Cold weather gives you the perfect excuse to wear scarves, turtlenecks, or high collars when running errands.
  • Staying In: It is socially acceptable to “hibernate” in the winter. You are less likely to have pool parties or outdoor weddings to attend, making it easier to clear your calendar for a week.

Your Lip Lift Recovery Kit: Arnica for bruising, ice packs for swelling, and a cozy scarf for effortless camouflage when you're ready to step out.

3. The “Thursday Strategy” (For Working Professionals)

If you work from home or have a desk job, you do not need to take two weeks off work. Many of our patients use the “Thursday Strategy” to minimize PTO days:

  • Thursday: Surgery Day (Take off work).
  • Friday: Recovery Day (Take off work). Swelling begins.
  • Saturday & Sunday: Peak swelling. Relax, ice, and binge-watch Netflix.
  • Monday & Tuesday: Work from home (Cameras off or mask on). You will feel fine, but your lip will look stiff.
  • Wednesday: Suture removal appointment.
  • Thursday: Back to “Zoom ready” (with a little concealer).

4. Can I Wear a Mask?

Yes! Since 2020, wearing a mask in public has become normalized. This has been a game-changer for lip lift patients. If you need to go to the grocery store or pick up kids from school on Day 3, simply wear a standard medical mask. It completely hides the sutures and swelling while protecting your incision from the sun. No one will look twice.

5. The “Wedding Rule”: When NOT to Book

While the initial healing is quick, the scar takes time to mature. The incision line may remain slightly pink or stiff for a few weeks to a few months.

If you are the bride, the mother of the bride, or have a major photoshoot coming up, do not book your surgery 3 weeks before the event.

Our Advice: We recommend scheduling your lip lift at least 3 months before any major life event where high-definition close-up photos will be taken. This ensures your smile is relaxed, natural, and fully settled.

Ready to Check the Calendar?

There is never a “perfect” time for surgery, but there is definitely a smart time. Whether you choose the privacy of winter or maximize your summer vacation days, the result a permanently youthful, lifted smile is worth the week of planning.
