Clitoral Hood Reduction in 2023

Having excess tissue around the clitoris can cause discomfort and even be visible in the form of a bulge under clothing. It can also interfere with a woman’s sexual performance and pleasure.  Decreased sexual sensation and discomfort arising from extra skin around the clitoris are treated with clitoral hood reduction.

Our expert staff performs the clitoral hood reduction procedure by removing the excess tissue that covers the clitoris to create a sleek, tailored appearance. During a hood reduction procedure there is no surgical alteration of the clitoris itself. Oftentimes, ignoring the redundant clitoral hood during a labiaplasty procedure may make the vulva (or outer tissue surrounding the vaginal opening) appear “top-heavy.” Therefore, clitoral hood reduction is often performed at the same time as a labiaplasty for a tailored “Tulip Transformation.”

What Is Involved with a Clitoral Hood Reduction Surgery?

A clitoral hood reduction surgery removes excess skin and tissue (prepuce) around the clitoris. Tiny dissolvable sutures close up the incisions, and the stitches go away on their own (dissolve) in four to six weeks.

The 30-minute procedure is often done in combination with a labiaplasty, which reduces the size and length of a woman’s labia minora, or inner vaginal lips. Because labiaplasty involves alterations up to the clitoral hood, lots of women decide to add a clitoral hood reduction in order to avoid a “top-heavy” appearance in the vaginal area.

Patients receive light sedation and injectable numbing medicine for the clitoral hood procedure that takes place in comfortably in our office.

Will This Treatment Decrease Clitoral Sensation?

Absolutely not. In fact, this reduction procedure actually increases clitoris stimulation due to reducing the barrier of tissue that can decrease sensation. The clitoris and the nerves surrounding it are not touched during this procedure.

On the other hand, if decreased vaginal sensation is already a concern, we may recommend treatments such as Votiva vaginal rejuvenation and PRP injections for sexual health–either in combination with or outside of addressing the skin around the clitoris.

What is Recovery Like?

With very little pain or discomfort, patients usually return to work within a few days after clitoral hood reduction.  To allow for best healing, we recommend that women avoid sexual intercourse for six weeks. Oral pain medications like Tylenol and Advil may be needed for the first few days, to decrease discomfort and swelling.

Women should keep the treated area clean with a peri-bottle of water and light dabbing with toilet paper.

I’m Interested in a Consultation — Now What?

Our patients will receive a full exam to determine if clitoral hood reduction is the right choice for them. The minimally invasive procedure remedies what women sometimes find as a disfiguring, enlarged clitoris. Clitoral hood reduction also can improve comfort levels while exercising and wearing tight clothing.
