1. Begin correction early : Recognizing an ear deformity and starting correction as soon as possible will lead to the best treatment outcome. Dr. Fishman prefers to see babies within their first one to three weeks of life to begin treatment. At the 6-8 week mark, the maternal estrogen starts to drop off, which stiffens the baby’s ear cartilage making it more difficult to reshape the ear.

2. Make sure your baby is well-fed: We recommend caregivers arrive early for their appointment and take plenty of time changing, bottle-feeding or breastfeeding, and burping their baby before we get started. Babies who have recently eaten tend to sleep through treatment and this also decreases caregiver worry.

3. Keep the treated area dry: We do not want any spit-up, milk, or water to get into the splints. It is important that the splints stay dry, so that the adhesive stays secured to your baby’s ear/head for the full 10-14 days.

4. Reinforce at home if needed: We will send you home with brown paper tape to reinforce the splints if the adhesive starts to lift up. If more than 50% of the splint lifts up, please contact the office to come in for a follow-up.

5. Feel free to dress your baby in hats and headbands: Hats and headbands can help keep the EarWell system in place and prevent your baby from messing with the ear splints.

6. Research and understand your options for ear correction: Well-informed patients and parents of patients make well-informed decisions. There are a few different options for newborn ear correction including EarWell, Earbuddies, and custom splints. During your consultation, Dr. Fishman will work with you to decide which treatment option is best for your child and the degree of ear correction that they need.

7. Treatment is completely painless: The Earwell system or custom ear splints do not hurt your child during placement or while they’re being worn. Most children sleep through the placement of their ear splints. The ear canal is never obstructed, so your baby can still hear you and the world around them perfectly clear.

8. Take progress photos: We take photos before and after complete correction, but feel free to take your own photos to keep track of how things are progressing.

9. Monitor for complications: Complications are minimal when it comes to newborn ear correction. Dry and irritated skin is normal during treatment, but if you notice any foul-smelling odors, a red or blanched ear, or other abnormalities, contact the office immediately.

10. Celebrate progress: Typically, results are seen within 4-8 weeks of beginning ear correction. This is a high satisfaction procedure for many patients. If ideal results are not achieved, surgical options can be discussed once the child reaches around 7 years of age.
