Description

This 31-year-old woman came to our practice with the goal of improving the appearance and feel of her labia minora, or the folds of skin around the vaginal opening. She was bothered by excessive length of the labia minora, didn’t like how this skin protruded beyond the level of the labia majora (outer folds of skin around the vaginal opening), and reported needing to reposition these tissues frequently in her clothing and underwear. She disliked the appearance of a pelvic bulge in clothing and swimwear, and felt very self-conscious about her appearance with intimacy.  This patient reported a labiaplasty procedure 15 years ago, as a teenager, and reported she was not overall satisfied with the results at that time; she also reported further stretching and growth of labia tissue with her pregnancy and childbirth. On exam, she had excessively long and thick labia minora tissue and a moderate amount of clitoral hood redundancy.

We treated this patient with a revision labiaplasty, performing a bilateral (both-sided) curvilinear labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction to take away the excessively long inner labial skin and contour the too-long tissues around the clitoris for overall aesthetic balance.  The patient also had a perineoplasty to remove the excess tissue at her perineum (space between the vagina and anus). The patient is shown just 11 days after her labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction surgery, with a beautiful result and much improved symmetry; she has a lot of swelling left to resolve, and even with this, she already reports improved comfort.  She is also shown here, immediately after her surgery.

Our patient had her treatment awake and relaxed in the comfort and privacy of our clinic, and was excited to see her results immediately after surgery.  She did not receive general anesthesia, and was very comfortable during her treatment with relaxing medications, ProNox (laughing gas), and injected numbing medicine.

Labia and vaginas come in an wide array of normal shapes and sizes.  While they have normal anatomy, some women feel uncomfortable with too-long or stretched or asymmetric labial tissues, which can develop after puberty, weight changes, pregnancy, or childbirth.  We frequently combine labiaplasty procedures with clitoral hood reduction, growth factor injections for improved sensitivity and sexual health, and vaginal rejuvenation to achieve optimal intimate health for our patients.

Our Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman has extensive background and experience in aesthetics and surgery, having completed as Aesthetic Gynecology fellowship in addition to her plastic surgery training.  Women’s wellness is both her passion and ours, and we take pride in caring for our patients with intimate wellness and sexual health concerns.

About Surgical Labiaplasty

Enlarged or uneven labia minora (the inner lips of tissue surrounding the vaginal opening) are effectively treated with the common (though uncommonly discussed) procedure called labiaplasty.  For most women, the labia minora are for the most part covered by the labia majora (outer lips).  In others, however, genetics, puberty, aging and pregnancy can cause the inner lips to extend beyond the outer lips.  Some women can experience discomfort and irritation with overly long labia minora, leading to discomfort in clothing, during exercise, and with sexual relationships, while other women may just be bothered by the appearance of the labia.  Labiaplasty treatments can address these concerns. We have expertise in both surgical and non-surgical labiaplasty to help women feel their most confident and address any intimate anatomy concerns.Learn More About Surgical Labiaplasty
