Morpheus microneedling has seen a huge explosion in popularity, with celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Lindsey Lohan touting its benefits in the news. This innovative microneedling and radiofrequency treatment helps improve the texture of the skin, improve the appearance of fine lines, scars, and stretchmarks; and stimulate new collagen and elastin formation for younger, smoother skin.
We recently asked our medical aesthetician, Alla, to tell more about Morpheus. Check out her explanation and pearls for best treatment outcomes below.
“Morpheus is essentially microneedling on steroids, and I love, love microneedling,” says Alla. Microneedling is a therapy to create tiny channels of injury within the skin and its dermis undersurface layer, and this stimulates collagen, and shrinks down pores. “I love microneedling because it helps with active acne and acne scarring, and my patients see smoother, glowing skin within just a few treatments,” Alla says. “Morpheus takes the benefits of microneedling to a whole other level with the addition of radiofrequency, which generates focused heat to stimulate new collagen growth even more,” Alla explains further, saying, “The results I see with Morpheus are probably at least five to ten times more improved than with regular microneedling. I think this is the biggest reason for the popularity Morpheus is enjoying.”
What should we know about Morpheus treatments?
“Morpheus hurts,” says Alla, “but it should be a manageable level of discomfort.” Alla recommends topical numbing medicine for at least 90 minutes before treatment, and often encourages her patients to use relaxing laughing gas as well. “It’s not the most comfortable procedure, yes, and I speak from experience having treated my own face and neck several times. But the results are significant and worth the pain!”
The results are not instant, Alla explains further. “Some of my patients notice a significant skin smoothing even after a treatment or two, but I really do advise all my patients that they will see the biggest benefits around 6-8 weeks after a third treatment,” she says.
What does Morpheus treat best?
“Morpheus is a skin polisher and collagen booster,” says Alla. “This is a great treatment for skin texture imperfections–enlarged pores, fine lines, acne scars, and stretchmarks.” It is true that Morpheus tightens the skin, but this is definitely not a so-called scarless face lift or neck lift, Alla highlights. “If someone has pronounced jowling or excess, droopy skin in their neck, I recommend a surgical discussion with my daughter {facial plastic surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman},” Alla explains, saying that she often does Morpheus on patients who have already had facial surgery and wants to ensure a more durable result, or to “polish” the skin over their newly rejuvenated features. “Morpheus treatments do not replace a tummy tuck, of course–but for my patients who don’t want surgery, or have loose skin that’s too minimal to require surgery, Morpheus is the perfect option,” says Alla.
What should we know about Morpheus recovery?
“Handle the treated skin gently, and avoid irritating things for a weeks after Morpheus treatments,” Alla recommends. She recommends plain Vaseline on the treated skin for the first 24-48 hours, and then frequently advises patients to use a hypoallergenic and moisturizing cream after this. “My latest obsession is Epionce’s Medical Barrier cream after the initial healing period,” says Alla, noting its calming qualities and soothing, moisturizing characteristics. If not this, CeraVe and Cetaphil are great options. “The initial recovery from Morpheus are 1-2 days of redness, but the skin stays sensitive for up to 3 weeks, and so I caution patients against using retinol, vitamin C, or submerging the treated skin in dirty lake or ocean water during this period of time,” Alla says.
