Description
This 2-week-old (adjusted gestational age 36 weeks) girl was brought in by her mother for concerns of ear deformity. Mom reported the ears looked folded over at birth, and had not improved since then. Our Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Inessa Fishman diagnosed the baby with a bilateral (both-sided) congenital ear deformity, and treated her with a 4-week-long course of non-surgical newborn ear therapy using the Earwell correction system. The patient is shown with an excellent correction and a beautiful treatment outcome after completing treatment; her ears look more symmetric and open after treatment. This non-invasive treatment allows for progressive and painless reshaping or molding of the ear, reforming the ear cartilage permanently.
Earwell newborn ear correction is a highly effective treatment which allows Dr. Fishman to treat many types of newborn ear deformities. It works to correct congenital ear deformities in more than 90% of cases, and allows patients to avoid otoplasty surgery. The non-surgical newborn correction treatment is most effective if started within the first few weeks of life, as the baby’s ear cartilage is most pliable during this time. As the baby grows to 6-8 weeks old, the maternal estrogens which make ear cartilage soft and moldable gradually decrease, and the chance of successful ear correction drops off.
